BALTIMORE, MD, October 30, 2023 – INFORMS, the largest association for the decision and data sciences, has awarded the 2023 Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in the Practice of Advanced Analytics and Operations Research to the Decision Engineering team from Intel for their work on the transition of semiconductor products from a single large monolithic chip to an assembly of dozens of small chiplets (aka “disaggregation”). This work has realized more than $500 million in benefits so far. The award was presented at the 2023 INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
The prize-winning paper, “The Sort-Assemble-Blend Routing Problem and its Application to Semiconductors,” provides profound applications of analytics and operations research (O.R.) techniques to address the stochastic nonlinear routing problem facing the manufacture of “disaggregated” semiconductor products and finds a way to streamline the issues yielding millions in benefits.
Congratulations to Nicholas Mason, Rachel Rosenberg, Evan Rash and Karl Kempf and all of the Decision Engineering team at Intel Corporation.
Additional finalists for the 2023 award included:
- “Smart Parcel Consolidation at Cainiao”
- Yujie Chen, Yuwei Chen, Haoyuan Hu and Yinzhi Zhou all, Cainiao Network
- Biao Yuan, Sino-US Global Logistics Institute and Shanghai Jiao Tong University
- “Delta Coverage: The Analytics Journey to Implement a Novel Nurse Deployment Program”
- Pengyi Shi, Purdue University
